DIY Kitchen Storage Solutions
If you don’t already know, I am a tall woman. Understandably, I was slightly irritated that our cabinets don’t go all the way to the ceiling but instead a bulk head was built in, awesome 70’s, thank you. After 7 years in this house I finally figured out a way to reclaim that wasted space!
Took a photo and sketched out my plan.
I went to the hardware store and comparison shopped online. I was in sticker shock at the price from the store and then I found these 1/2 inch floor flanges and pipe nipples.
I bought the 2in thick boards from Home Depot after measuring the space twice (always measure twice!)
I also needed these corner brackets to add hidden support along the wall.
Grab some wood screws that are long enough to make a good anchor but not poke through the other side of your boards.
DIY Shelf Instructions
- Screw the brackets into the wood while it’s resting on the floor, evenly space them for support.
- Measure and evenly space the flanges on the board. Screw them on.
- Put the nipple into the mounter flange and twist on the top flange that will be mounted to the ceiling.
- Grab a friend or two and have them hold the shelf up so you can mark the ceiling with a pencil through the holes of the top flange.
- Set the board down, twist off the top flange an screw it to the ceiling.
- Important! Screw the nipple all the way into the flange on the board.
- Have friends hold the board up again.
- When you lift the board up to attach it to the top flange which is now mounted to the ceiling you will have to twist the nipple to screw it into the top flange… which will UNscrew it from the bottom flange. This is no big deal if you start with it all the way in on the board. Then it will end up being half way in on both the top and bottom. Which is plenty for support.
- Screw all the corner brackets to the wall.
- Done! Thank your friends for the help!
