I Love Scrabble!
When I saw the idea for these awesome wall scrabble letters I started thinking how I could incorporate this clever decor idea into my home. After some searching online and pricing out already made large wooden tiles, my frugal self had to DIY again!
What Color are Scrabble Letters?
I happened to already have the wood square cuts left over from another project.
I chose the Golden Pecan stain. I used pine lumber so after seeing how the Pecan is a peachy tone I realized I should have bought an Oak to more closely match the look of real wood game tiles. I still love how it turned out though. There are SO many stain shades… Just pick a light one for black lettering or a dark one for white lettering.
These squares are approximately 5x5x.75 in. You can make any size. Just buy a slat of lumber the width you’d like and them cut all the tiles that same width to make a bunch of squares.

After the stain dried I decided to paint my letters onto the wood. You could also use a fancy vinyl sticker machine… but… Mrs.Frugal strikes again. So I actually just printed my Scrabble letter file out from my home printer and tried two methods.
First I centered them on top of the wood square and traced the letter with a ball point pen which left an indentation I then traced with a ruler and a sharpie and colored in with a black paint pen. I didn’t care for the indentation look so I resorted to cutting out the letters and tracing them. These oil based sharpies are perfect for writing over the oil based stain.
How to Hang Scrabble Tiles
To hang the Scrabble tiles I discovered a simple method using wire brads. My daughter helped me hammer 2 nails about half way into the top corners on back of the wood.
Then I used a level to align and marked guidelines on the wall with oh so handy ultra washable crayola markers which just wipe right off the wall.
(These markers were my favorite when I had toddlers!)
The squares can then be simply held up and bonked onto the wall.
I used my hand with a little pounding motion and they were instantly mounted.
The two nails ensure they won’t tilt! It’s just wonderful.
